In China's wine import source countries, France has long occupied an important position.
The latest data from the Wine Importers and Exporters Branch of the China Chamber of Commerce for Food, Soil and Animal Import and Export show that from January to March, China imported 106 million liters of wine from France, the import value of 103 million US dollars, the import volume ranked second among the 13 major import source countries, and the import value ranked first.
French wine has long been in the first place in China's wine imports, but from the overall trend in recent years, it shows a significant contraction trend.
In 2021, wine imports from France amounted to 115 million hectolitres, with an import value of $753 million, which is relatively high. In the next two years, the volume and amount of contraction.
By 2023, wine imports from France will reach 64 million liters and the import value will reach 560 million US dollars, which will decrease by 28.67% and 15.45% respectively.
According to the data of the Wine Importers and Exporters Branch, in 2023, China's wine imports were 250 million liters, down 25.8%, and the import value fell 19.1% to 1.16 billion US dollars, and about half of this 1.16 billion US dollars was contributed by French wine.
Among them, the import of bottled wine was 160 million liters, and the import value was 1.09 billion, the volume decreased by 29.5% and 17.6% respectively. Bulk wine imports amounted to 88.12 million liters, or $72.14 million, down 17.7 percent and 36.7 percent, respectively.
On the whole, affected by the domestic wine consumption environment, the contraction of French wine imports is consistent with the contraction trend of China's overall wine import market.
At the same time, according to 2023 data, the average price of imported wine from France is 8.75 US dollars/liter, an average price increase of 18.54%. It can be seen that French wine occupies an advantage in the domestic high-end market, and high-end has a strengthening trend.
The development of the domestic wine market is influenced by many factors, but French wines always play a key role.
At present, the domestic market has not yet formed a strong wine consumption atmosphere, most consumers have not yet formed the habit of drinking wine, which has greatly affected the wine market in China.
But it has to be admitted that with the new generation of young consumers and women drinking demand is rising, wine consumption is moving in a better direction.
With the conclusion of a number of cooperation between China and France, it will continue to benefit the long-term development of the domestic wine industry.
